The Lower Manhattan atelier was quiet.

At 11:40 p.m., June Shaw stood in front of the familiar white door, her hand resting on the knob.

She was not supposed to be back tonight. The veil had already been boxed up that afternoon, but she had suddenly remembered a stray thread along the inner hem. It would disrupt the contour of the concealed heart motif—a detail she had spent three months hand-sewing. She could not let a single flaw ruin it now.

The key turned softly in the cylinder.

She pushed the door open an inch.

The lights were on inside. Warm yellow track lighting spilled across the central island, where a few fabric swatches lay scattered across the surface. Then came the sound—a low laugh, caught in the throat. Followed by the soft, unmistakable rustle of fabric rubbing against fabric.

June froze. The door hung motionless at that one-inch gap. Standing in the darkness of the hallway, framed by that narrow sliver of light, she saw her wedding gown.

White lace, finished with the curved neckline she had spent three months perfecting, every floral appliqué along the waist sewn down by her own hands.

She had poured three years of her life into that dress. From the initial pencil sketches to the finished silhouette, through thirty-two revisions and seven re-patternings, right down to the final pearl she had secured herself.

Now, another woman was wearing it.

Vivian Hayes was sitting on Marcus Cole's lap. The train of the gown pooled across the floor like melted cream. Vivian tilted her head slightly, the line of her neck elegant and exposed.

Marcus's right hand rested against her waist, his fingertips grazing the lace appliqué—the very piece June had designed specifically to conceal the side seam.

Marcus leaned down and murmured something into Vivian's ear.

Vivian buried her face in the crook of his neck, laughing, letting her entire weight sink against his chest. The neckline of the gown slipped off one shoulder, exposing her collarbone and the nude strap of her bra.

June let go of the doorknob.

She took a step back. Then another. And a third.

The hallway wall was cold against her back as she leaned against it, her head resting against the painted drywall. Overhead, the fluorescent fixture cast a dim, sickly glow.

Her first reaction was not rage.

It was shame.

The moment her eyes took in Vivian wearing that dress, the first complete thought that formed in her head was: She looks better in it than I do.

Vivian's shoulders were a centimeter narrower than June's, her waist sitting slightly higher. On June, the gown was a precise fit; on Vivian, it looked as though it had been made for her from the start.

The way she lounged across Marcus's lap was effortless, as if she had worn the piece a hundred times before.

June herself had only tried on the fully finished gown four times. The last fitting had been two weeks ago. Standing before the three-way mirror in the studio, she had turned around three times, while Marcus—sitting in the exact spot he occupied right now—had murmured, "Perfect," before looking back down to answer an email.

June reached into her coat pocket and found her phone.

She moved back to the door, raised the camera, and aligned the lens with the gap.

The viewfinder framed a triangular sliver of light: Vivian's profile, the sweep of the gown's back, and Marcus's fingers—his index finger tracing the lace pattern down until it settled in the hollow of her lower back.

June took a photo. Then another.

For the third, she held down the shutter for a burst of five. Some were blurred, some sharp, one catching the exact second Vivian tilted her head back and Marcus kissed her earlobe.

June slipped the phone back into her pocket.

She did not push the door open.

Turning, she headed toward the stairwell, her heels barely making a sound on the hallway carpet. A floor down, it occurred to her that she could have taken the elevator, but having started down the stairs, she simply kept walking.

Three flights. Forty steps. She counted every one. When she stepped out onto the street, the wind was biting. Late December in Manhattan; the air felt like a frozen towel wrung dry.

She walked three blocks before finding an available cab.

Once inside, she gave her East Village address. The driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror, probably because of how calm she looked—a woman in an overcoat stepping out of a commercial building at ten minutes to midnight, her face devoid of any expression.

June turned toward the window. Streetlights drifted past her field of vision, bars of light sweeping across her pupils. She blinked twice. There were no tears.

She arrived back at her apartment at 12:20 a.m.

She unlocked the door and left the lights off.

On the coat hooks beside the shoe cabinet hung three coats she had lent to Vivian and never gotten back: a camel Max Mara, a black Acne Studios, and an old forest-green The Row. The last one had been a graduation gift from her mother.

When June had said, "Go ahead and take it," Vivian's eyes had lit up as she promised, "I'll bring it back next week." Since then, the coat had hung in Vivian's apartment. June saw it every time she visited, yet she had never once asked for it back.

She kicked off her shoes, walked barefoot into the kitchen, and pulled a bottle of water from the fridge. She unscrewed the cap and took two sips. The water was icy, making her throat constrict as she swallowed. Leaning back against the kitchen counter, she pulled out her phone.

The photos were still sitting in her camera roll.

She tapped the first one. Zoomed in.

The angle between Marcus's index and middle fingers—the slight curve of his knuckles—was the touch of someone handling a texture he already knew by heart. It was not a tentative gesture. It was muscle memory.

June locked the screen.

She walked into the living room and sat down on the floor. There was no rug, and the hardwood was cold. Pulling her knees to her chest, she rested her forehead against them.

The only sounds in the apartment were the hum of the refrigerator compressor and her own steady breathing.

She found herself calculating the hours poured into that gown—scouring four separate textile vendors, waiting two weeks for the French lace import. She had worked late nights for three months on the hidden heart embroidery. Whenever Marcus called to ask where she was, she would say she was finishing up at the studio. When she told him she wanted it to be a surprise, he had laughed over the line and said, "You're the surprise."

That was two months ago. She remembered every word.

Her phone lit up.

A message from Marcus: "Don't stay up too late. You're going to be the most beautiful bride tomorrow. ❤"

June stared at the text for a long time.

The cold glow of the screen washed over her face, leaving her expression blank. She typed two words, then deleted them. She typed a single acknowledgment, then deleted that too. Finally, she sent back an emoji: 😊.

Delivered.

She watched that yellow smiling face for ten seconds, then turned the phone face down onto the floorboards.

She did not sleep before dawn.

She remained on the kitchen floor, her back against the lower cabinets, her fingers clutching the piece of veil she had brought back from the atelier. She hadn't realized she had grabbed it on her way out, but there it was in her hands.

The edge of the tulle bore the continuation of the concealed heart motif. She had spent three months extending the embroidery from the gown onto the veil, picturing the moment Marcus leaned in to kiss her during the vows and noticed the stitching.

She caught a loose thread with her thumbnail and pulled. One stitch came undone. Then another.

At four-thirty, she texted Claire.

Claire had been her college roommate and was now a partner at a Midtown Manhattan law firm, specializing in commercial litigation and family law disputes.

The last time June had texted Claire before dawn was six years ago, the night her mother was hospitalized.

Claire replied within six minutes.

She did not call.

June sent a text: "Are you awake? I need you to pull some records for me."

The typing indicator appeared four times on Claire's end, pulsing for a couple of seconds before vanishing. Finally, three words came through: "What records?"

June's fingers did not tremble as she typed: "A signature on a loan guarantee, and three years of corporate bank statements. I'll meet you at your office at six."

Claire replied: "Come on over. Don't worry about breakfast—I'll grab sandwiches."

June set the phone down.

It was still dark outside. Down on the East Village street at five in the morning, an occasional car rolled past, tires hissing over the asphalt.

She looked down at the veil in her hands. The edge of the heart embroidery had been unpicked into a small gap, the white silk thread loosening into an open loop. Leaving it on the kitchen counter, she walked into the bathroom and splashed cold water on her face. In the mirror, faint bluish shadows bruised the skin beneath her eyes, and her lips were pale.

Yet as she looked at her reflection, she found the face more familiar than usual. Normally she was always smiling—at Marcus, at Vivian, at clients, at herself. The face in the mirror wasn't smiling now, and because of that, it looked more like her than it ever had.

She opened the closet to pick out clothes for the day. Her fingers slid along a row of blouses and outerwear before stopping on the one at the very end—a replacement for the forest-green The Row coat, a gray cashmere piece she had bought herself. Vivian had never touched it.

She slipped it on and sent Claire a message: "On my way."

At the doorway, she looked back once at the veil on the kitchen counter. The loose thread unraveled softly, like a disturbed cocoon. She didn't go back to fold it.

She locked the door behind her.
