I had learned how to enter Adrian Blackwood's office without making a sound.

There it was. Not our anniversary. Dinner.

"Because I am done," I said.

His gaze dropped to my left hand.

Adrian noticed its absence now.

Of course he did. Men like him always noticed when a possession had been moved.

"And the marriage?" he asked.

The word sounded strange in his office. Too human for all the glass and steel.

I turned to the next page and placed my finger under the title.

"You also signed the separation agreement."

The room changed.

Adrian picked up the document and read the last page.

His signature waited there, bold and impatient.

For once, his own efficiency had betrayed him.

His eyes came back to me.

He stood.

He stopped too close.

I stopped.

The habit had slipped out before I could catch it.

Adrian heard it. His eyes softened with satisfaction, as if my warning proved I was not really leaving.

That small look was the final cut.

I took the top sheet from the folder and placed it on his desk.

"Actually," I said, "the allergy note is in the transition manual. Chloe can handle lunch."

His expression lost the softness.

Good.

Let him feel the absence while I was still in the room.

I stepped back.

"If there is nothing else, Mr. Blackwood, I will begin the handover."

He hated that. I saw it in the way his shoulders went still.

"Don't call me that."

"We are at work."

"You are my wife."

"Not here," I said. "You made sure of that."

The words were not loud.

They did not need to be.

Adrian looked at me as if I had slapped him. Maybe I had. Maybe truth, after seven years of careful silence, sounded like violence to a man who had never had to hear it.

I turned before my courage could cost more than I had budgeted for.

At the door, he spoke again.

"Evelyn."

I stopped, but I did not turn.

"You will come home tonight."

There he was. Not asking. Not pleading. Commanding the world back into shape.

For the first time in our marriage, I did not help him.

"No."

The silence behind me sharpened.

"Where will you be?"

Then I opened the door and walked out.

The outer office went quiet when they saw my face. Mark looked up from his tablet. Chloe froze with a stack of folders in her arms. Two analysts near the printer suddenly became fascinated by toner.

I smiled because I had trained myself to smile under worse pressure than this.

"Chloe," I said, "please come to my office in ten minutes. We are starting the transition manual."

Her eyes widened. "Transition?"

"Yes."

Behind me, Adrian's office door remained closed.

For seven years, I had measured my days by what happened behind that door. His mood. His needs. His calls. His hunger. His silence.

I thought leaving would feel like tearing skin from bone.

Instead, as I walked down the hallway with the signed papers in my hands, I felt something stranger.
