My husband's office smelled like cedar, leather, and a perfume that did not belong to me.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was the black lace thong caught in the seam of his sofa.

For a moment, I just stood there with the folder in my hand, staring at that little scrap of fabric as if my mind could force it to become something else. A stocking. A ribbon. A stupid prank from one of his assistants. Anything but what it obviously was.

It was cheap-looking, too. Not because it was badly made. Because it was trying too hard. Thin black lace, a tiny gold charm sewn at the waist, a design meant to whisper sex before a woman even took off her dress.

It was not mine.

I had never worn anything like it in my life.

Three nights ago, Adrian had told me he was entertaining an important female client in this very office. He had rolled his eyes when he said it, then laughed against my neck and complained that her perfume was so sweet it had nearly given him a headache.

I almost laughed now.

A headache.

If he had buried himself between another woman's thighs on this sofa, I doubted the smell had bothered him that much.

The city hummed outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. Traffic. Sirens in the distance. The muted rhythm of a life that did not care whether my marriage had just cracked open in the middle of the afternoon.

I placed the folder on his desk because my hands had started to shake.

"Elena?"

I turned.

Adrian stood in the doorway of the conference room, one hand still on the glass handle. Tall, dark-haired, perfect as ever in a charcoal suit that looked tailored to his bones. He smiled the second he saw me, and for one ugly, humiliating heartbeat, my body remembered loving that smile before my mind caught up.

"You made it." He crossed the room in three easy strides and kissed my cheek. "I swear, I don't know what I'd do without you."

He meant the file. He had forgotten it at home that morning and asked me to bring it downtown because he was trapped in meetings all day.

Because he had worked late again last night.

Because he had not come home.

I looked up at him. "Would you?"

He blinked. "Would I what?"

"Know what to do without me."

His smile flickered, only for a second. If I had not spent five years studying the smallest changes in his face, I might have missed it.

"That sounds dramatic." He reached for my wrist and rubbed his thumb over the inside of it. "What's wrong?"

I held his gaze. "Do you love me, Adrian?"

He stilled.

His hand tightened around my wrist just slightly before he let go and laughed under his breath, like I had asked the most ridiculous question in the world.

"Where is this coming from?"

"Answer me."

His expression softened in the way it always used to when he wanted to make me feel safe, wanted to remind me of eighteen and college libraries and cold pizza eaten out of cartons, of promises made before money and family names and polished dinner tables changed the shape of everything.

He lifted my hand to his mouth and kissed my knuckles.

"Yes," he said quietly. "I do. I will always love you."

It was almost a beautiful lie.

Then a woman's laugh drifted in from the outer office.

Light. Careless. Intimate.

I knew before I saw her.

Adrian knew too. I watched the muscle jump in his jaw. He released my hand and stepped a fraction to the side, enough to block my view of the hallway. It was a useless gesture. The sound was already there between us.

"Adrian?" the woman called. "Your assistant said I could wait in here if you're almost done."

He closed his eyes for half a beat and then opened them again, smooth and composed.

"One second," he called back.

Then to me, lower, "Listen, sweetheart, I really am stuck here. Let me have Paul drive you home."

Sweetheart.

He used that voice with me. The warm one. The patient one. The voice that had once made me believe I was the center of his world.

I stepped around him.

He tried to stop me without making it obvious, but he was too late.

She was standing by the reception desk with one hip angled toward the window, one hand in her hair. She was younger than me by maybe four or five years, pretty in a bright, obvious way. Blond-brown waves, a fitted ivory dress, glossy lips parted into a smile that looked surprised only because she had practiced making it look that way.

There was a mark on the side of her neck.

Not fully hidden by makeup.

Not meant to be.

I looked at it. Then I looked at Adrian. Then back at her.

She held out a hand. "Hi. You must be Elena."

I did not take it.

"And you are?"

"Chloe." She tilted her head and let her hand fall. "Chloe Bennett."

Her perfume reached me then. Sweet, heavy, almost sugary. The kind that clung to skin and fabric and the inside of cars.

The kind Adrian said gave him headaches.

Adrian came up behind me. Too close. Not touching me, but near enough that I could feel the strain in him.

"Chloe's with Hargrove Hospitality," he said. "We're finalizing a design package with them."

I turned to him. "On the sofa?"

For the first time, his face went blank.

Chloe's smile shifted. Sharpened.

I wondered if she knew that I knew. I wondered if he had told her I was too gentle, too polite, too in love to make trouble.

He lowered his voice. "Elena."

The warning in it should have broken something in me.

Instead, it cleared my head.

"You don't have to send someone with me," I said. "I'm not a child."

"You're upset."

"Am I?"

He studied me, maybe trying to decide whether I was about to explode, about to cry, about to humiliate him in front of a woman he had already humiliated me for.

I did none of those things.

I walked to the desk, set my wedding ring briefly against the polished wood just to feel how cold the metal was, then slid it back into place.

"I brought your file," I said. "You're welcome."

He moved toward me. "Elena, don't do this here."

I looked at him for a long moment.

The man in front of me had once slept on a hospital chair for two nights when I had pneumonia in college. He had learned how I liked my coffee. He had kissed my forehead the morning we got married and whispered, You're home now.

He had also fucked another woman on his office sofa.

"I am not doing anything," I said. "You already did it."

Chloe shifted her weight. Adrian's assistant disappeared into the copy room with the speed of someone fleeing a fire.

No one spoke.

I left before my pride could crack in front of them.

The elevator ride down felt longer than the marriage itself.

By the time I reached the lobby, my phone buzzed in my hand.

Not Adrian.

An email notification.

I almost ignored it. Then I saw the sender.

Daniel Greenberg.

European Projects Division.

My pulse changed.

I stepped out through the revolving doors and onto the sidewalk before opening it. Cars crawled past. Someone brushed my shoulder and kept moving. My whole life felt like it had shifted two inches off its axis, and the city still expected me to wait at crosswalks like a reasonable person.

I opened the email.

The Zurich offer was still on the table.

If I accepted, I would relocate the following Monday. Minimum three years. Full leadership over the new hospitality concept team. I had seven days to confirm.

Seven days.

I read that line three times.

The wind lifted the ends of my hair. Somewhere above me, Adrian Hall remained in his office with his client and her perfume and the lie he had spoken directly into my face.

Seven days.

It felt less like an opportunity and more like a sentence that had accidentally turned into mercy.

Not freedom yet.

A delay.

A narrow strip of time between knowing the truth and deciding what kind of woman I would be once I could no longer pretend not to know it.

My phone rang.

Adrian.

I watched his name flash across the screen until it stopped.

Then I opened the email again and whispered, to no one at all, "A week."

It sounded like a prayer.
