The bronze racks stood like tired sentries in the palace armoury, their shadows jumping each time a torch spat. Grishvrinsha ran her thumb along the rim of a shield, feeling the cold dents left by someone else’s battle. Tomorrow those dents might be hers, but tonight the metal still smelled of oil and old victories, and she wanted to remember it.

She set the shield down and began to unplait her hair. It was a foolish thing to do—time slipping through her fingers while the city slept—but the war she rode to was secret, and secrets needed private ceremonies. Strand by strand she loosened the black coils, counting under her breath the way her mother once counted linen thread at the frontier looms. One, two, three… when she reached thirty she would braid it again, tighter, tight enough to keep her skull from splitting with fear. She was at nineteen when the door creaked.

“You’ll wake the whole palace,” Prince Rulvan whispered, though his voice cracked like a boy’s. He stood in the archway wearing only a linen bed-robe, feet bare on the flagstones. “I thought it was a thief.”

“Go back to bed.” She did not turn. Twenty-one, twenty-two.

“You’re leaving tonight.” He stepped inside, pulling the door until the latch clicked soft as a secret. “I heard the armourers yesterday. They spoke your name and then looked over their shoulders as if the walls had ears.”

Twenty-five. She yanked the last knot free, hair falling heavy against her spine. “The walls do have ears. Yours, for one.”

Rulvan came closer, his shadow merging with hers on the wall. “Take me with you.”

“You’re fourteen.”

“Fifteen next moon.”

“Still a child.”

“I can hold a spear.”

“So can a farmer.” She turned then, meeting his eyes in the low light. “But a farmer doesn’t have the blood of emperors. If I fall, you are the spare.”

He flinched at the word, the way any sane person flinches at a sudden crack in ice. “Then don’t fall.”

“I don’t plan to.” She began re-braiding, fingers quick now. “Plans rarely ask our consent.”

Rulvan watched her hands as if they performed a spell. “Mother said the same the morning she rode north.”

The memory slid between them like a blade: their mother in battered scale, crest of scarlet horsehair snapping in the wind, promising to return before the first frost. The frost came, and the snow after, and finally a single riderless mare trotting home with a broken rein. Grishvrinsha’s fingers faltered; she started the braid again.

“She died because the council hesitated,” she said. “They sent too few, too late. I will not wait for their next mistake.”

“So you’ll make your own?”

“Smaller, and mine to wear.” She finished the braid, coiled it, and pinned it flat against her scalp. “Close the door on your way out.”

He didn’t move. “Father will brand you traitor. Secret war is still war without sanction.”

“Then let him brand me.” She lifted the lightest cuirass from the rack, leather stiff with new lacquer. “The empire is bleeding through a wound they refuse to stitch. I’ll cauterise it in the dark where no courtiers watch.”

Rulvan’s bare toes curled against the cold stone. “At least tell me where.”

“If I don’t return, you’ll sit the throne wiser for not knowing.” She buckled the cuirass, tightening until the edges bit. “If I do return, you’ll greet me with silence and a cup of water, and we will never speak of it again.”

He swallowed. “I’ll bring the water.”

“Good.” She reached for the seal pouch at her belt, drew out the small jade disk carved with the imperial dragon. It caught the torchlight, green fire frozen in stone. “Hold this.”

He cupped it like an egg. “Why?”

She drew her dagger, the one their mother used to cut apples on winter nights, and sliced her left palm. Three drops of blood fell—no more, no less—onto the dragon’s eye. The stone drank them, dark lines blooming like roots.

“So the empire remembers,” she said, wiping the blade on her sleeve. “And so I remember.”

Rulvan’s face shone wet but he made no sound. She took the seal back, pressed it against his forehead, leaving a smear like a warrior’s stripe. “Keep the palace standing until I return.”

“I will.” His voice came out steady, surprising them both.

She buckled on greaves, vambraces, finally the cloak the colour of wet ash. No helm—she wanted the night wind in her hair, wanted to feel the size of the sky. At the doorway she paused, hand on his shoulder. “If you wake tomorrow and I’m gone, don’t run to the stables. Let the emptiness teach you what I already know.”

“What do you know?”

“That the empire is not marble halls and senate robes. It is a name we carry in our mouths until it cuts our tongues, and we still speak it.” She squeezed once, let go, and slipped into the corridor.

The slave-gate lay at the eastern wall, a slit built for refuse carts, now rusted and forgotten. Two guards lolled beside it, sharing a skin of plum brandy. Their laughter died as she approached, but they saw the cloak, the crestless armour, and recognised nothing. She tossed them a silver coin apiece; they stepped aside, eyes already back on the bottle. The gate groaned open just wide enough for a horse, and for her.

Outside, the night smelled of wet hay and distant smoke. A single torch burned by the postern where the black mare waited, reins held by an old groom whose face was all wrinkles and no questions. Grishvrinsha took the reins, felt the mare’s warmth surge up her arm like a second pulse.

“Mind her hooves on the river stones, my lady,” the groom muttered. “She’s tender on the off fore.”

“I’ll walk her through the shallows.” She swung into the saddle, leather creaking like a ship leaving harbour. “Close the gate when we’re shadows.”

He nodded, already shrinking into himself.

She touched heel to flank and they moved, hoofbeats muffled by dew-soaked grass. At the first ridge she reined in and looked back. The palace lamps flickered like dying stars, and among them she imagined Rulvan standing at a window, forehead still marked with her blood. She raised her hand—not a wave, only a reminder that flesh could still feel air—and turned the mare toward the north where the horizon was blacker than the sky.

No torch, no banner, no name. Just the smell of earth loosening under hooves, the mare’s breath steaming, and the slow drum of flight. Somewhere ahead the enemy waited, sharpening blades they thought unseen. Somewhere behind, the empire slept fitfully, dreaming of marble that might already be cracked.

She clicked her tongue. The mare broke into a canter, and the sound of it—steady, certain, fading—was the last thing the night kept for itself.
