Sinossi

To settle her family's crushing debt, Evelyn Reed is forced into a marriage contract with her ex-boyfriend, Julian Sterling—the man who ruthlessly betrayed her when her family lost everything six years ago. Now pawns in his father's game, they are bound by a fake engagement, their days filled with mutual hatred and suspicion. But when they discover their tragic breakup and their families' feud were all part of a calculated conspiracy, can their relationship, born from a contract, burn away the lies and reignite a true love in the flames of revenge?

Capitolo1

The scent of damp and defeat clung to the narrow halls of the Pimlico flat. It was a smell Evelyn Reed had grown painfully accustomed to over the past six years, a stark contrast to the lilacs and old money that had perfumed her childhood. She nudged the sticking door open with her shoulder, balancing a paper bag of groceries, the meager spoils of her shift at a Covent Garden café.

Her father, Arthur Reed, was slumped in the one threadbare armchair the room possessed, his shoulders bowed not just by age, but by the weight of failures Evelyn knew all too well. Before she could even set the bag down, a sharp, authoritative rap echoed from the door.

Arthur flinched. Evelyn’s heart hammered against her ribs. Unannounced visitors were never a good sign.

She opened the door to a sight that ripped the breath from her lungs. A man in a Savile Row suit, his silver hair immaculate and his eyes as cold and grey as the London sky, stood on their worn-out welcome mat. Two younger men in similar, though less expensive, suits flanked him like well-dressed gargoyles.

Alistair Sterling.

The name was a ghost, a curse whispered in the ruins of her family’s life. The architect of their downfall. Her ex-boyfriend’s father.

“Mr. Reed,” Alistair Sterling’s voice was smooth, cutting through the stuffy air. “I believe we have an outstanding matter to discuss.”

“I-I need more time, Alistair,” Arthur stammered, shrinking in his chair.

Alistair’s gaze flickered to Evelyn, a flicker of something unreadable—amusement? Pity?—in their depths. “Time, Arthur, is the one commodity you’ve run out of. The debt stands at ten million pounds. It is time to pay.”

Evelyn stepped forward, her body a shield in front of her trembling father. “There’s nothing left to take,” she said, her voice low and steady, belying the tremor in her hands.

Alistair’s lips curved into a smile that held no warmth. “On the contrary, Miss Reed. It’s a pleasure to see you again. A shame about your circumstances.” He let the insult hang in the air before continuing. “You misunderstand. I’m not here to take. I’m here to propose a solution.”

He took a deliberate step into the room, his expensive leather shoes looking obscene on the scuffed linoleum. “A merger of sorts. A union to settle all accounts.”

Evelyn stared, bewildered. “What are you talking about?”

Alistair’s cold eyes met hers. “Your hand in marriage to my son, Julian. A simple engagement, and all this,” he gestured vaguely at their impoverished surroundings, “disappears. Your debt, forgiven. Your family, provided for.”

The room spun. It wasn’t a proposal; it was a sentence. He was offering her a gilded cage built on the ashes of her heart, and the jailer would be the boy who had handed her the matches.
