Maya pressed her palm flat against the dirt. Frost had kissed the ground last night, and the morning hadn't warmed it yet. The grass was stiff, brittle, each blade a tiny frozen needle. She breathed out a cloud and watched it dissolve over the grave marker.

*Eleanor Vance. Beloved. Gone Home.*

Home. Maya's fingers curled, digging into the soil. That word sat wrong in her chest, like a stone swallowed by accident. This wasn't home. This was a hole in the ground with a limestone lid. And the thing underneath had been waiting for her to come back for three days now.

"I know you're there."

No answer. But Maya felt it—a shift, like pressure changing before a storm. The air thickened, condensed around her, tasted like copper and dust on the back of her tongue. It always started this way, a tightening deep in her gut, a buzzing along her spine that crawled up into her skull. Some people get migraines. Maya got the dead.

"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner," she said, quieter now. "Mrs. Orton had me stay after for algebra again. Like I'm gonna need quadratic equations for this."

She tugged at the sleeve of her jacket—a hand-me-down from her cousin, the cuffs frayed, the zipper catching on the fabric every time she tried to pull it up. Her fingers were stiff, the tips white with cold. She pressed them into her armpits, hunching forward, knees digging divots in the frosted grass.

"Please. I just need to talk to you. One more time."

The earth shifted.

Not the dirt—Maya hadn't raised her yet, hadn't pulled the thread of her own power taut and wrapped it around the thing in the ground. But something underneath rolled over, turned its attention toward her like a sleeper disturbed by a noise in the next room. The marker trembled, a thin, high sound escaping the stone, like glass vibrating. Maya felt it in her molars.

*Maya.*

She flinched. The voice didn't come from outside. It rose from inside her chest, from the hollow beneath her ribs, where her own voice lived, but wrong. Bent. Brittle.

*You shouldn't have come. I told you not to come back.*

"I know." Maya's voice cracked. She swallowed, hard, and pressed both hands flat on the dirt. The cold bit through her jeans at the knees. "But I don't know how to do this alone. I don't know how to make it stop."

*Make what stop?*

"Her." The word came out before she could catch it. "The woman who visits me. In the dark. She sits in the corner of my room and she talks to me and I can't make her leave, Eleanor. I can't—"

She stopped. Her throat had closed up, the way it did before the tears came, and she hated that. Hated that she could make the dead rise from their graves but couldn't keep her own voice steady.

"That's not her," Eleanor's voice whispered inside her skull, humming through her bones like a low note on a cello. *That's not the dead you need to worry about. The dead don't hunt.*

Maya's hands trembled. "Then what does?"

Silence. The buzzing in Maya's skull grew teeth, sharp and invasive, and she gasped, pressing her palms against her temples. The world swam—the cemetery tilted, the sky a pale, watercolor blue overhead, the bare branches of the oak tree splintering the light.

*Something else,* Eleanor said, and her voice was fading now, pulling back like a tide. *Something that's been watching you longer than you've been watching it. You're a beacon, Maya. You light up the dark for things that should stay hidden.*

"Wait—"

*Go home. Lock the door. And don't raise me again. Not even if you think you have to.*

"Eleanor!"

But the grave was still. The weight in the air lifted, dissolved into the ordinary chill of a November morning. The marker stood silent. Maya's breath came fast and shallow, her pulse beating against the inside of her wrists.

She sat there, alone in the cemetery, the frost melting beneath her knees, turning the fabric of her jeans dark and wet.

She didn't know how long she stayed. Long enough for the sun to climb higher, to steal the sharpest edge from the cold. Long enough for her fingers to go numb and her nose to start running. Long enough for the graveyard's caretaker to find her, a thin man in a canvas jacket, his eyes narrowed with suspicion and concern.

"You okay, kid?"

Maya looked up at him. His face was ordinary—gray stubble, a faded scar above his left eyebrow, the kind of face you saw and forgot. But his eyes were sharp, tracking her, reading her like a book she hadn't meant to leave open.

"I'm fine." Her voice sounded like someone else's. Flat. Hollow. "Just visiting."

He glanced at the grave. "You knew Eleanor?"

"She was my aunt."

It wasn't a lie. Eleanor had been her mother's friend, but *aunt* was close enough. Close enough to be true. The caretaker nodded, something softening in his face.

"Lost my aunt two years back," he said. "Cancer. You never get used to it, do you?" He didn't wait for an answer, just turned and walked back toward the maintenance shed, his boots crunching on the gravel path.

Maya watched him go. Then she climbed to her feet, her knees aching, her palms red and raw from the cold.

She walked home.

She didn't run, though everything in her wanted to. Eleanor's words clung to her like cobwebs she couldn't brush off. *Something's been watching you. A beacon. Things that should stay hidden.*

The house was quiet when she let herself in. Her mother was at work—double shift at the hospital, wouldn't be home until late. The kitchen smelled like burnt toast and coffee left too long on the warmer. Maya locked the door behind her, then checked it twice.

She stood in the hallway, her back to the door, listening.

The house breathed around her. The refrigerator hummed. The furnace clicked on, a low groan through the vents. Normal sounds. Safe sounds.

But the corner of her bedroom door was just visible from where she stood, and in the dim light of the hallway, it seemed darker than it should be. A shadow that didn't quite match the angle of the afternoon sun.

Maya's throat tightened.

She walked to the door. Pulled it open.

The room was empty. Bed unmade. Clothes on the floor. Homework scattered across the desk. Everything exactly as she'd left it.

And in the corner, the chair she'd pulled away from the desk and turned to face the bed. Empty. Rocking, ever so slightly, as if someone had just gotten up.

Maya stood in the doorway, her heart hammering, her breath shallow.

She didn't go in. She closed the door, walked backward down the hall, and sat in the kitchen with her back to the wall, watching the bedroom door until the sun went down and the shadows in the house grew long and unfamiliar.

The dead didn't scare her.

But the thing that visited her at night, sitting in that chair, wearing her mother's face and whispering promises in a voice that wasn't her mother's voice—that thing scared her more than she'd ever admit.

Tonight, she'd keep the lights on.

Tonight, she wouldn't sleep.

And if Eleanor was right—if something had been watching her, waiting for her to grow strong enough to notice—then maybe she needed to learn more about what she was, what she could do, before it found her.

She pulled a notebook from the kitchen drawer, the spine cracked, pages curling at the edges, and opened it to a clean page.

At the top, she wrote: *Things I Know About the Dead.*

Beneath it, she wrote: *They're not the only ones out there.*

Then she sat, pen in hand, and waited for her mother to come home.
