The light pressed down in layers, and Yukina had spent four hundred years learning exactly how much weight each one carried.

At the edge — this rank of strata, no higher, no lower than her rank permitted — the pressure sat comfortable against her wings, a held hand rather than a held breath. She could feel, without looking, the exact point where the light thinned into something a lower rank would never be allowed to stand in; could feel, too, the density stacked above her, layer on layer toward strata she had never once tried to enter, because the atmosphere itself made the trying feel like walking into a wall she couldn't see.

Nobody had built that wall. Nobody needed to. Rank did the work a wall would have, the way water does the work of knowing which way is down.

She stood at her post, the causeway's furthest one, and pressed her palm flat to the seam.

Steady. The same faint, patient hum it always had — a held note that never resolved and never needed to.

This was the duty. Not to watch the seam. To touch it. Four hundred years of stillness was a fact about the past, not a promise about the next four hundred, and someone had to keep confirming the difference.

The gold at her brow shifted with the movement — a second pulse, sized for seventh-rank, no more, no less. Wind moved down the causeway and stirred hair the same pale, exact blue as the light itself. The runners had an old joke about which of the two had been dyed to match the other. She had heard it perhaps forty times. It had not yet stopped being slightly funny.

She was not the only one at the edge. Down the curve of the world, other agents stood at other posts, doing what she was doing — palm to light, reading, filing, moving on. Half a mile off, a smudge of gold and pale hair told her, without needing to resolve into a face, that whoever stood there was doing the same. She didn't need to see the rank to know the shape of the work.

Four hundred years, and the seam had never once asked more of any of them than this. Attention. Patience. The willingness to stand somewhere quiet and confirm, over and over, that nothing catastrophic was currently occurring.

She had never found it tedious. Iori, three posts down, complained about the tedium constantly — never where a senior rank could officially hear it — but Yukina had always found something correct in the stillness, a discipline that asked nothing of her except the thing she was already good at: watching, for exactly as long as watching was required.

"Seventh."

She turned. One of the runners cycling the seam that hour — junior enough that Yukina had never learned a name for her, only a function, which was architecture and not unkindness. The runner's temple-wings had already gone flat against her skull, deference as automatic as a bow.

"The resonance is inconsistent," the runner said. "Half a degree, perhaps less. I wanted it noted before I filed the cycle as nominal."

"Noted." Yukina pressed her palm flatter, listened again. Unchanged. "Half a degree is instrument drift. The seam has moved further than that in ordinary weather."

"I know. I only wanted it noted."

"Then it's noted, and you did the correct thing by mentioning it." Yukina let the smallest warmth into her voice that rank allowed.

The runner's wings didn't move again — no residual doubt left in them. She inclined her head and moved on to the next post along the curve.

Yukina remembered being that age. She remembered it the way one remembers a country visited once, briefly, a long time ago.

On the causeway a third-rank passed going the other way; she inclined her head the precise half-degree owed to a senior, and it was returned, briefer, neither of them breaking stride.

This was the whole of touch, in the world she came from. Economical. Exact. Always in service of something. She had pressed her palm to the seam a thousand times and touched almost nothing else, in the whole of her existence, without a reason attached to the touching. She didn't think of this as loneliness. She had nothing to compare it to, and so no way of knowing there was a difference.

Word filtered up sometimes, through channels nobody officially sanctioned, about the closer planes — elven households built around blood and inheritance, demonic contracts binding pairs and clusters together for reasons that read as emotional as often as strategic. She had never given the reports much weight. Attachment was a liability. A vulnerability an enemy, or a crisis, could exploit. She had believed this for longer than the reports had existed to prompt the comparison.

An hour left before convocation. Eight words already composed: seam nominal, resonance within tolerance, no action required. After that the cycle was hers to spend the way she spent most of them — alone, in silence that didn't require managing, didn't need to be read, didn't ask anything of her she wasn't already fluent in giving.

Her quarters sat three levels down: one room, occupied longer than some entire human dynasties would eventually last, spare in a way that suited her. A shelf of field reports she'd written herself and reread more than was probably useful. A couch that had never once held a second occupant. A window that looked out over nothing in particular and had never needed to look out over anything more.

She found it sufficient. She had found it sufficient for four hundred years.

It happened on the walk back.

No warning. No tremor.

One step she was rehearsing her eight words. The next, every sound stopped.

Not quiet. Stopped. Mid-breath, mid-footfall, like the world had been asked a question and refused to answer.

The causeway froze around her. The third-rank she'd passed, wings half-lifted, caught. The runner, mouth open around a word already gone. Far off, the smudge of gold, still as stone.

Her small wings locked rigid against her skull. She had never once felt them move without her.

Then the sound came.

Tearing. No better word existed.

It climbed past hearing. Into her teeth. Into the bones behind her ears. Into whatever told her which way was down — and that, too, stopped agreeing.

Time lost its shape. It felt like four hundred years exhaled in one breath.

The seam opened beneath her.

She fell.

Not the way a body falls. No down. No up. Only motion, every direction at once, and a silence so total it pressed on her like a hand.

Seam nominal, she thought. Absurd. The words still queued for a convocation that no longer existed. Resonance within tolerance.

It was the last complete thought she had for some time.
