The first thing my husband gave me after the vows was not a kiss.

It was a command.

"Kneel."

Adrian De Luca said it softly, like a man ordering another drink, not a bride to the floor in front of half the underworld.

The red lights above us hummed. Cameras watched from every corner of the room, small black eyes set into the velvet walls. Men in dark suits stood around circular tables with glasses in their hands and guns under their jackets. Women in silk leaned close to whisper, their diamonds catching the red light like drops of frozen blood.

Somewhere behind me, a screen showed my face.

Elena Vale.

New wife of Adrian De Luca.

Debt bride.

Family joke.

That was what they wanted me to be.

Adrian stood three steps away, tall and still in his black suit. He had not loosened his tie since the ceremony. He did not look drunk. He did not look happy. Men like him did not need to show emotion to fill a room. They simply entered, and everyone else remembered fear.

His eyes stayed on me.

Gray. Cold. Beautiful in a way that should have been illegal.

I had known men like him all my life. Men who took silence for obedience. Men who mistook a woman's calm for surrender. Men who believed a ring could become a collar if they pressed hard enough.

But I had not come back to Ravenport to surrender.

I had come back for the dead.

For the girl I used to be.

For the old woman who still kept a porch light burning because she did not know her granddaughter had been buried under another name.

So I lowered myself to the floor.

Slowly.

Not because Adrian De Luca had broken me.

Because sometimes a woman had to kneel to see where every knife in the room was hidden.

The marble was cold through the thin fabric of my wedding dress. My knees touched first. Pain rose sharp and familiar from an old scar under my left kneecap. I kept my face smooth. Around me, someone laughed. Someone else lifted a phone.

Adrian's mouth curved.

It was not quite a smile. It was worse.

"There," he said to the room. "My wife understands quickly."

A ripple of amusement moved through the Red Room.

I looked up at him through my lashes. "A useful quality in a house like yours."

The laughter thinned.

His gaze sharpened.

Good, I thought.

Look closer.

He stepped toward me, his polished shoes stopping inches from my dress. He bent slightly, enough that only I could hear his next words.

"Do not mistake tonight for a conversation."

His voice was low. Expensive. Rough around the edges, as if it had been dragged through smoke and bad decisions.

"Then stop asking me to perform," I said.

For one second, something flickered in his eyes.

Not anger.

Interest.

Then his hand closed around my chin.

He was not gentle, but he did not hurt me. That mattered, though I hated that I noticed. His thumb rested just beneath my lower lip, warm against the powder I had carefully laid over my skin.

"You are here because your father's debts needed a body attached to them," he said.

My father's debts.

A useful lie.

Everyone in the room knew the story Adrian had paid for. Elena Vale, orphaned, pretty, desperate, bought into the De Luca family to settle an old account. No past worth discussing. No relatives with enough power to ask questions. No one to mourn her if she disappeared.

It was almost perfect.

Except Elena Vale had never had a father who owed Adrian De Luca anything.

Elena Vale had barely existed three years ago.

"And you are here," I said, "because your family still believes marrying a woman is cheaper than admitting what it did."

His fingers tightened.

The room went quiet in that strange way powerful rooms did. No one gasped. No one moved. They simply listened harder.

Adrian's face did not change.

"Careful, wife."

Wife.

The word should have sounded absurd between us. It should have meant nothing. A legal trick. A bloodless contract signed in a private chapel under the De Luca crest.

Instead it landed somewhere deep and old inside me, touching a bruise I had not permitted myself to look at in years.

Four years ago, a younger Adrian had stood under rain-dark glass and wrapped his jacket around my shoulders.

Four years ago, he had looked at me as if I were something he might save.

Four years ago, I had believed him.

That girl had been easier to kill.

I smiled at him.

"I'm always careful."

His gaze dropped to my mouth.

For a heartbeat, the noise of the room disappeared. The cameras. The men. The red light. All of it blurred behind the clean line of his jaw and the heat of his hand on my face.

I hated him for that too.

For still being able to make my body remember a time before the lake, before the dark, before I learned how long a person could stay alive after everyone else had decided she was dead.

Adrian released me.

"Bring the glass," he said.

A waiter appeared at once, holding a silver tray with a single flute of champagne. The liquid inside was pale gold. Pretty. Poison could look pretty too.

Adrian took it and held it down to me.

"Drink," he said. "A toast to obedience."

More laughter.

I took the glass.

My fingers were steady. That always surprised people. They expected shaking hands from women in white dresses surrounded by wolves. They forgot women learned steadiness in places where shaking got them killed.

I lifted the champagne.

"To obedience," I said.

Then I tipped the glass and poured it onto the marble between us.

Gasps this time.

Small ones. Controlled ones.

The champagne spread in a bright puddle over the floor, reaching the edge of Adrian's shoe.

His jaw flexed.

Behind him, an older man with silver hair and a thick gold ring laughed under his breath.

"She's got teeth," the man said. "Maybe we should check how sharp."

His name was Marco Bellini, one of the family elders. I knew his face from the files I had spent three years building. He liked girls who looked scared. He liked them young. He liked them indebted.

He stepped toward me.

Adrian did not move.

Marco crouched, smelling of cigar smoke and old cologne. He reached for the veil that had slipped over my shoulder.

"No need to waste a wife with spirit, Adrian. Let us teach her properly."

His fingers brushed the lace near my collarbone.

I did not flinch.

I wanted to.

My skin remembered hands. Rope. Rain. The taste of dirt in my mouth.

But I had survived worse than Marco Bellini's fingers.

I looked past him at Adrian.

For the first time that night, I let him see the disgust in my eyes.

Not fear.

Disgust.

Marco's hand slid lower.

Adrian moved.

Fast.

One second he was standing above me, still as a statue. The next he had Marco's wrist in his hand.

The crack was clear even over the music.

Marco screamed.

Adrian did not raise his voice. He did not even look angry. That was the frightening part. He held the older man's broken wrist as if it were a glass he had decided to set down.

"Do not touch what is mine," he said.

Mine.

The word moved through the room like a blade laid flat on every throat.

Marco dropped to one knee beside me, face gray with pain. Two guards started forward, then stopped when Adrian glanced at them.

"She is a debt bride," Marco spat through his teeth.

Adrian leaned closer to him.

"She is my wife."

I should not have felt anything.

Protection from a man like Adrian De Luca was never clean. It was not kindness. It was possession dressed in a better suit. He would break a man's wrist for touching me and then lock me in a room if I tried to leave.

I knew that.

I knew it so clearly that I hated the small, stupid part of me that still warmed at the word wife.

Adrian released Marco, who stumbled backward into the arms of another man.

Then my husband turned to me.

"Stand up."

I stayed where I was.

His eyes narrowed.

"Elena."

My name in his mouth sounded like a warning.

Not my real name.

Never my real name.

I placed one palm on the marble to push myself up. My left knee gave a sharp pulse of pain. I ignored it. The dress had been designed to look delicate, not to let a woman move. The fabric caught under my heel.

Before I could steady myself, Adrian reached down and took my arm.

His grip was firm. Not cruel.

Again, I noticed.

Again, I hated myself for noticing.

He pulled me to my feet, and the room watched as if this were romance.

Maybe to them it was.

A monster breaking another monster's hand because he did not want to share his toy.

Adrian's fingers remained around my arm. "You enjoy testing me."

"No," I said. "I enjoy learning where your limits are."

"And?"

I looked at Marco being led away, pale and sweating.

"You have at least one."

His mouth twitched.

It was gone so quickly I might have imagined it.

The screens around the room shifted. Comments ran up the side of the encrypted feed in white text. I had known there would be cameras, but seeing my face multiplied across the Red Room still made something tight coil under my ribs.

Not panic.

Never panic.

Memory.

The De Lucas liked rooms underground. They liked red lights. They liked witnesses who paid to watch pain.

Four years ago, there had been no cameras.

Only rain.

Only trees.

Only Adrian's father's voice saying, People disappear here all the time.

My hand curled at my side.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he noticed. Men like him survived by reading rooms, and I was the only room he could not open.

"Enough," he said to the crowd. "The show is over."

A few men protested. One of the women laughed, thinking he was joking.

Adrian looked at the nearest camera.

"Turn it off."

The operator hesitated.

That was a mistake.

Adrian did not repeat himself. He simply stared.

The red recording light went dark.

Then another.

Then all of them.

The room relaxed, but only a little.

I did not.

Because I had seen the main screen before it shut down.

One comment had stayed pinned longer than the rest. A line of text from a user with no icon, no name, just a black square.

She looks like the Rosewood girl.

My pulse slowed.

Not quickened. Slowed.

Fear made people careless. I had learned to let it settle cold.

Adrian followed my gaze to the blank screen.

"What did you see?"

"Nothing."

"You lie badly."

"You don't know me well enough to know how I lie."

His eyes returned to my face.

"I know enough."

I almost laughed.

He knew Elena Vale. The file. The dress. The debt. The useful little orphan his family could parade and punish.

He did not know Sofia Rosewood.

He did not know the girl who had crawled through mud with a broken body, nails torn to blood, while his family wiped her name from the world.

He did not know the woman standing in front of him now had spent three years learning how to come back without looking like a ghost.

But he would.

One day, Adrian De Luca would know every inch of what his house had done to me.

And when he did, I wanted him awake for it.

"Take your bride upstairs," Isabella De Luca said from the head table.

Adrian's mother had been silent for most of the evening. She sat with her back straight, her dark hair pinned perfectly, her pearls resting against her throat. She looked like a woman carved from money and discipline.

I remembered her hands around a teacup.

I remembered her smile.

My, what a beautiful young woman.

Exactly my son's type.

My stomach did not turn. I had trained it not to.

Adrian glanced at her, then back at me.

"Walk," he said.

Not please.

Never please.

I took one step.

Pain flashed through my knee so hard my vision spotted.

The scar had opened. I felt warmth slide under the thin stocking. Not much, but enough.

Adrian's gaze dropped.

So did mine.

A dark red bead slipped down from beneath the lace at my knee and hit the marble.

Then another.

The champagne puddle had thinned across the floor, pale gold under the red lights. My blood landed in it and spread slowly, opening like a small black rose.

For a second, no one spoke.

Then one of the screens that should have been dark flickered back on.

Not the video feed.

Only comments.

White text on black.

One line appeared.

Then another.

That's not Elena Vale.

Zoom in on her face.

Look at the knee.

Four years ago. Saint Mercy Lake.

My breath stayed even.

Adrian's hand tightened around my arm.

The final comment pinned itself at the top of the screen.

She looks like Sofia Rosewood.

The room went silent.

At last, truly silent.

Adrian turned his head slowly toward me.

For the first time since he had put his ring on my finger, my husband looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Not yet.

But close enough.

I looked up at him and smiled.

Because the dead girl had finally entered the room.
