The red stain on the tablecloth had dried before Adrian came home.

It sat near the head of the long dining table, dark and ugly against the white linen, where one of the maids had spilled wine during the afternoon rush and forgotten to change the cloth. I had noticed it at six. At seven, I told myself I would replace the linen after dinner. At nine, I told myself there was no point because he had not come home. At midnight, I stopped making excuses for either of us.

The house was quiet in the way rich houses were quiet. Not peaceful. Watched.

Every clock ticked too clearly. Every light left too much shadow. Somewhere past the dining room doors, two guards stood near the entrance with their hands folded in front of them, pretending not to listen. A maid had passed the room three times in the last hour and looked away each time she saw me still sitting there.

I had circled the last line twice.

Lot 47 bothered me. Wanting anything from Adrian Blackthorne was usually foolish.

The lasagna in the kitchen had gone soft from being reheated. I had made it because it was one of the few dishes he used to eat without complaint when we were children. Back then, before suits and guns and women with red lipstick, he would come into the kitchen after training with bruised knuckles and a bad temper, steal a corner from the pan, and tell me I looked too serious for someone who could not talk.

I had loved him even then.

That was my first mistake.

A car engine rolled up the drive at twelve forty-three.

My back straightened before I told it to. The guards outside shifted. One of them murmured into his earpiece. The front doors opened, and cold air slid through the house ahead of him.

Adrian always arrived like weather. You felt the pressure change before you saw him.

His steps crossed the marble foyer, slow and heavy. Not drunk enough to stumble. Not sober enough to be kind. My fingers closed around the edge of my notebook.

He appeared in the doorway still wearing his black evening suit, though the tie hung loose around his neck and two buttons of his shirt were open. His dark hair was pushed back carelessly, as if a woman's hands had been in it. There was a faint line of blood across one knuckle. Not his, most likely. Adrian rarely bled where anyone could see.

Then the scent reached me.

And Bianca De Luca's perfume.

I knew it because she wore it like a declaration. Jasmine, amber, something sharp underneath. A scent made to linger on a man's collar and survive another woman's house.

Adrian's eyes moved over the table, the untouched food, the single glass of water at my place. They stopped on me.

"Still awake?"

His voice was rough. Low. The sort of voice that made other men lower their eyes and women forget the danger until it was too late.

I stood because I had been trained to stand when a Blackthorne man entered the room. Not by etiquette lessons. By years of watching what happened to people who did not understand power fast enough.

I lifted my hands and signed, Dinner is warm.

Adrian looked at my hands the way some people looked at insects.

"Don't."

My fingers stilled.

He came closer, pulling the tie free from his collar. He dropped it on the table, right over my notes. His cuff brushed the notebook and shifted it half an inch. I saw the circled Lot 47 disappear beneath black silk.

"I already ate."

Of course he had.

Bianca liked late restaurants, private rooms, flashbulbs outside when she wanted to be seen and back doors when she did not. She had been raised in a family that lost its power but not its taste for attention. Adrian had been raised to take what he wanted and call it duty after.

I nodded once and reached for the notebook.

His hand came down first.

Not hard. Just enough.

The tips of his fingers pinned the cover to the table.

"What is this?"

I swallowed. My throat tightened, not with words. There were no words there. Only the old locked place where sound used to live before blood, gunfire, and a kitchen cabinet stole it from me.

I slid the notebook out from under his hand as gently as I could and opened to the marked page. I pointed to the numbers. Then to the line about Lot 47.

Adrian did not read it.

He watched my face.

"Tomorrow night my father's men will put his ring on my hand," he said. "The families will be in my chapel. The Morettis will be looking for weakness. The Romanos will be counting who stands close enough to me to matter." His mouth curved, but there was no humor in it. "And my wife wants to talk about invoices."

My wife.

He always said it like a blade he did not remember buying but still liked using.

I picked up the pen and wrote beneath the circled number.

It appears in three accounts. It may be important.

He finally glanced down. His eyes moved across the sentence. Something flickered there, quick and cold, but it vanished before I could understand it.

"You think everything is important because you sit in this house all day with nothing to do."

The words landed where he meant them to.

I had run this house for three years. I knew which guards gambled, which suppliers overcharged, which maids sent money to sick mothers, which cousins stole from the wine cellar, and which of Adrian's men lied when they said a shipment was delayed by weather. I knew because no one was afraid to speak in front of the mute wife. People forgot silence could listen.

I wrote again.

Luca asked me to prepare the ceremony files.

Adrian leaned over me, one hand on the table. His closeness pushed the air from my lungs. He was beautiful in a way that had always felt unfair. Hard jaw, tired eyes, mouth made for cruelty and worship depending on the hour. A man like him should have looked ugly when he hurt people. He never did.

That was part of his violence.

"Luca works for me," he said. "Not for you."

I lowered my gaze.

It was a small surrender. I knew that. So did he.

His fingers slid under my chin and lifted my face.

The contact was not rough, but my body reacted before my mind could stop it. My shoulders went tight. My breath shortened. His thumb rested near the corner of my mouth.

"Look at you," he murmured. "Sitting here like a little saint with your cold dinner and your little notebook. Were you waiting to scold me, Seraphina?"

I shook my head.

"No?" His eyes dropped to my lips. "Then what were you waiting for?"

The answer came so fast it shamed me.

I had been waiting for him. Not the heir. Not the man who controlled half the ports from New York to Newark. Not the husband who came home smelling of another woman. I had waited for the boy who once wrapped his scarf around my shoulders after I shook for three hours in Don Lorenzo's kitchen. The boy who told me not to cry because crying made my face blotchy and then sat beside me until I stopped.

That boy had died long before Don Lorenzo.

I reached for the pen again.

Adrian caught my wrist.

"Use your hands," he said. "That's what you do, isn't it? Speak without making a sound. Convenient."

My pulse kicked. I tried to pull away. His grip tightened, not enough to bruise yet, but enough to remind me bruises were always an option.

"Tomorrow night you will stand beside me," he said. "You will wear what I send. You will smile when the old men kiss your hand. You will not drift around the room with that wounded look, making people wonder what I do to you behind closed doors."

I stared at him.

He laughed once, softly.

"Don't look so offended. We both know what people think. Poor Seraphina. Don Lorenzo's little orphan. Adrian's silent wife. Locked in a mansion with a monster." His thumb moved over the inside of my wrist. "Do you want them to be right?"

My skin burned under his touch.

I shook my head because that was the safest answer.

His eyes hardened anyway.

"Good. Then don't embarrass me."

He released me.

I brought my wrist to my chest and held it there. My heart beat against my knuckles.

A phone chimed.

Not mine.

Adrian took his from his pocket. The screen lit his face for half a second. I saw the name before he tilted it away.

Bianca.

He did not answer. He read.

Something in his expression changed. Not softness. Not guilt. A private irritation, as if she had touched a wound he preferred to keep for himself.

Then my own phone vibrated on the table.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

The message opened before I could decide not to touch it.

The photo appeared first.

White sheets. A hotel headboard. A man's cuff link on a bedside table.

Adrian's cuff link.

Black enamel. Silver snake. The old Blackthorne mark.

Below it, Bianca had written:

He should be standing beside me tomorrow night. We both know it. Try not to look too pathetic in my place.

For one second, the dining room became very clear.

The red wine stain. The cold plate. Adrian's tie across my notebook. The smell of Bianca on his shirt. My own reflection in the dark window behind him, pale and thin in a green dress I had chosen because he once said the color suited me.

I did not cry.

That surprised both of us, I think.

Adrian saw the screen. His jaw shifted.

"Give me that."

I turned the phone face down and placed my palm over it.

His eyes narrowed.

"Seraphina."

There it was. The warning in my name.

I had heard men beg under that voice. I had seen a capo twice Adrian's age go gray when Adrian said his name that way across a warehouse floor. The Blackthorne heir did not need to shout. His anger had money, guns, and patient hands.

I should have given him the phone.

Instead, I picked up my pen and wrote one sentence beneath the port numbers.

Adrian read it.

For a moment he went very still.

Then he smiled.

It was not a kind smile. It was worse than anger because it was almost beautiful.

"There she is," he said. "My quiet wife does have teeth."

Heat crawled up my neck. I wanted to cross out the sentence. I wanted to keep it there forever.

Adrian braced one hand on the back of my chair and leaned down until his mouth was close to my ear.

"Bianca will be wherever I tell her to be."

I shut my eyes.

His breath touched my skin.

"And so will you."

The words should have broken something in me. Maybe they did. But the sound I noticed was not my heart cracking. It was the soft slide of his tie slipping from the notebook to the floor.

My circled line showed again.

Adrian followed my gaze.

This time, he looked at the number properly.

His expression changed before he could hide it.

Only a second. Less.

But I had survived in this house by collecting seconds.

"Where did you see this?" he asked.

I did not move.

"Seraphina."

I looked up at him and slowly closed the notebook.

If Bianca wanted me pathetic, she would have to wait.

If Adrian wanted me silent, he already had that.

But silence was not the same as obedience.

His phone chimed again. Mine vibrated under my palm. The guards outside the door pretended not to breathe.

Adrian straightened. Whatever had shown in his face was gone, replaced by the heir, the killer, the man Don Lorenzo had built from blood and discipline.

"Go upstairs," he said. "The blue dress will be delivered in the morning."

I stood.

My knees felt weak, but I kept my steps even. I left the lasagna on the table, the wine stain in place, and Adrian's tie on the floor where it had fallen.

At the doorway, my phone vibrated one more time.

I looked down.

Another message from Bianca.

This one had no photo.

Just words.

Enjoy borrowing my throne, mute girl. Tomorrow night, I take it back.

I turned the screen dark.

Behind me, Adrian said nothing.

But I heard the notebook open.
