The Greyhound bus sighed into New Orleans, exhaling a gust of road-worn air that tasted of diesel and stale coffee. Marlon didn't notice. He was deep in a combat simulation, his lips moving silently, a bead of sweat tracing a path down his temple. He clutched a dog-eared, laminated document titled "Convention Conquest Strategy Guide" with the reverence of a zealot holding scripture. The passenger beside him, a weary woman with a sleeping child in her lap, shifted uncomfortably, pulling her arm away from the sphere of his intense focus.

"*Kimi no hitomi ni kanpai,*" he whispered, the Japanese phrase a clumsy stone dropped into the thick, humid air of the bayou. *A toast to your eyes.* Classic. Entry-level, but effective for establishing a baseline of cultural fluency. The woman shot him a look of pure, unadulterated confusion before turning to stare resolutely out the window at the passing swamp oaks. Marlon logged her reaction as neutral-to-positive; bewilderment was a form of intrigue, as stated in Section 2, "Initiating First Contact."

The Airbnb was a shotgun house sweating in the afternoon heat, the air inside thick with hairspray and the faint, sweet smell ofEVA foam. Three young women were in various states of pre-convention chaos. One, a redhead, was meticulously styling a vibrant blue wig on a foam head. Another was hunched over a sewing machine, the rapid *st-st-st* of the needle filling the room. The third sat on the floor, painstakingly painting details onto a piece of foam armor.

“Greetings, fellow artisans,” Marlon announced, dropping his duffel bag with a thud that made the floorboards groan. He beamed, taking in the scene. “Excellent. I can see a respectable level of commitment here.” He rounded on the redhead. “Good choice on the Arda wig, but your wefts are showing a bit on the crown. You need to tease the roots more for volume, otherwise the authenticity of the silhouette is compromised.”

The girl froze, her fingers hovering over the blue strands. She glanced at the seamstress, who had stopped her work, the silence now louder than the machine’s previous chatter. “Uh, thanks. I was getting to that,” the redhead mumbled, turning her body to shield the wig from his view.

“And you,” Marlon continued, turning to the girl on the floor. “Your beveling on that pauldron is sloppy. Did you use a fresh blade? A dull X-Acto knife will tear the foam, not slice it. It ruins the entire illusion of forged metal.” He leaned in closer, his shadow falling over her work. She flinched, pulling the armor piece protectively to her chest.

“I’m just here for the weekend,” she said, her voice small. “It’s just for fun.”

“Fun is the byproduct of excellence,” Marlon corrected gently, as if bestowing a great and secret wisdom. He left them in a stunned, uncomfortable silence, retreating to his designated room to prepare for the main event. They were amateurs, well-meaning but lacking in discipline. It was for the best; fraternizing with the lower ranks would only dilute his focus.

The convention registration hall was a swirling galaxy of noise, color, and bodies. The air hummed with a collective, joyous energy that Marlon registered only as background static. He was scanning, processing, filtering. His gaze swept over a dozen mediocre attempts—a sloppy Attack on Titan jacket, a poorly fitted superhero suit—before it locked. And the universe snapped into focus.

She was standing in the pre-registration line, a perfect celestial body in a sea of dim stars. Sailor Moon. Not just any Sailor Moon, but an ethereal, almost transcendent rendition. The fuku was made of a high-sheen satin that caught the light, the bow was impossibly crisp, the odango buns of her blonde wig were perfectly spherical and defied gravity. It was, in the parlance of his guide, a "Tier-S Target." This was Sakura. He knew it instantly.

He slipped into the line behind her, his heart rate elevating to optimal combat readiness. He began his analysis, a low, running commentary whispered just to himself. "Note the posture: confident, a slight contrapposto. This signals she is comfortable being the center of attention, a primary trait of high-value targets," he breathed. "Her friends are laughing with her, but she occasionally glances around the room. That's not distraction; that is passive scanning for a worthy challenger. Standard procedure." She shifted her weight, adjusting the strap of her bag. Marlon’s eyes narrowed. “Ah, the ‘unconscious preen.’ She’s adjusting her gear, making sure her presentation is flawless. She knows she's being observed. The game has begun.”

When she reached the desk, he saw his opening. This was it. Phase One: The Approach. He stepped up beside her as she was handed her badge, deploying the smile he’d practiced—a carefully calibrated mix of knowing confidence and artistic appreciation.

"An impeccable Super Sailor Moon," he began, his voice a touch louder than intended. "Most people use the wrong grade of satin for the skirt, but you’ve nailed the precise weight and drape. It’s a bold choice, going for the manga version of the brooch instead of the anime’s. A purist. I respect that."

Sakura turned to him, her smile polite but sealed, a perfectly pleasant barrier. “Oh, thank you very much,” she said, her voice clear and without a trace of the reciprocal intrigue he was expecting. She picked up her lanyard and badge.

“The name’s Marlon,” he pressed on, holding his ground. "I couldn't help but admire your dedication."

“That’s very kind of you. My name is Sakura,” she replied, already turning away from the desk. “Well, have a great convention.” She gave a small, final nod and walked away to join her friends, who immediately absorbed her back into their group, the circle closing like an iris.

Marlon stood motionless for a full three seconds, the cheerful chaos of the hall washing over him. The rejection was clean, immediate, and absolute. A lesser man would have been crushed. But Marlon wasn't a lesser man. He had the guide. He consulted its digital version in the fortress of his mind, flipping past chapters on initial contact and landing on Section 7: "Her First Defense: The Hard-to-Get Gambit."

Of course. It was textbook. A Tier-S target wouldn't fold on the first approach; she had to test his resolve, to weed out the weak. Her politeness was a feint, her quick departure a strategic retreat designed to make him prove his mettle. It wasn't a rejection. It was an invitation. He watched her blonde wig disappear into the crowd. The first move was hers. The next one would be his. He was already planning Phase Two.
