Emily Allen, twenty years old and barely a year out of high school, often felt like an extra in her own life story. Her parents had divorced when she was nine, a seismic event she’d been told was largely her fault – an "obstacle" to their freedom. Her grandmother, the only true family she'd known, had recently moved to the countryside to live with a sister, leaving Emily to fend for herself in the unforgiving sprawl of New York.

She worked part-time at Rose's, a new indie bookstore that was, to her surprise, thriving. A recent romance novel sensation on social media had sent a wave of eager customers through their doors, giving Emily a fleeting sense of purpose beyond scanning books and tidying shelves. But the meager pay barely covered the rent on her tiny apartment, let alone the art school tuition she’d once dreamed of. Her existence felt like a drab, muted painting, devoid of the vibrant colors she yearned to splash across a canvas.

Lately, an unsettling sensation had begun to cling to her – a prickling awareness of being watched. A fleeting shadow in her periphery, a lingering chill down her spine even on warm days. She brushed it off as stress, the city's constant hum playing tricks on her mind. Yet, faint whispers of unsettling news occasionally caught her ear – local disappearances, rumors of strange gangs operating beneath the city's glittering façade. "Just New York being New York," she'd tell herself, burying the apprehension deep down.

Suzy, the bookstore's owner and Emily's only real friend left in the city, noticed the subtle change. "You seem jumpy, Em," she'd say, her brow furrowed with concern. "Everything alright?"

Emily would just offer a weary smile. "Just tired, I guess. New York's a tough mistress."

Suzy, older and savvier, wasn't convinced. She'd known Emily since her grandmother first brought her to the store, a shy, bookish girl finding solace in fantasy worlds. There was a vulnerability in Emily that made Suzy fiercely protective. "Don't let this city eat you alive, kid," she'd warn, pressing a warm coffee into Emily's hands. "You're stronger than you think."

But Emily often wondered if that was true. Strong felt like a concept reserved for heroes in comic books, not for girls struggling to make rent and chase forgotten dreams amidst the concrete jungle. She didn't know then that the city was not just a tough mistress, but a predatory beast, and she was merely stepping into its maw.
